After Reading “The Machine Stops” by E.M. Forster

I was surprised at how the author wrote the story that I felt like he came from the
future because it’s like he knew what humans would be or act in the next hundred or
thousand years.

In the story, machines play an important role in humans’ lives. people cannot live without it. When they want to do something, they have to follow and learn the manual about what each button is for. This feels like humans in the future cannot learn to do anything except pressing the buttons, and then machines will do those things for them. This means people rely on the machines rather than relying on other people.

Not only that, even in the present time, it’s hard to see someone who doesn’t have a phone
or any electronic devices except for people who don’t have enough money to buy it, and
I believe that if they have enough money to buy, the phone will be one of the things that
they will purchase, for it has become one of the major ways to communicate with others.

Sometimes, I miss the old life when we don’t have the phone or internet because I think
that we have less privacy; for example, when we make mistakes, people capture it by
camera, and then they will post it on social media. They enjoy talking and gossiping with
each other til they forget what it would feel like to talk face to face.

Furthermore, I think people in the story are quite contrasting with people in the present time that instead of following the manual of machines, nowadays, people follow the manual of the society. When someone doesn’t follow the rules, they will become a black sheep or the outsider of society just like the homeless people in this story.

Moreover, I feel about the religion as the same as the story portrayed. I believe that in the future, people will worship the machine instead of any religion. I was once curious about the word “outsider,” for a while, and I am still curious about it even now whether this word occurred from the beginning of the religion or some event that made people know this word. Do people who are outsiders are the same group of people who are blamed to be wicked witches? This question still lingers in my head until now. However, I will not blame the religion for this, for people need something to rely on or cling onto, so they will have hope for a better day or their afterlife.
