In What We Need by Anuradha Roy, I got the sense from the author that he was longing to go and live his life as the same as before the Covid-19. I understand his point that during this difficult time, we see other people only on the screen. I have to say that I was lucky enough to live with my family. If I have to see them through the screen, I must have missed them so much.
Not only that, when we have to live only in one place for a long time, we tend to miss the atmosphere somewhere outside the house. The fresh air on the mountain that filled our lungs or the air from the sea that touched our nose made us feel how salty it is. For me, I miss these atmospheres so much.
Moreover, I understand another of his points that at the start of the pandemic, we worried about food and shelter. At the first time I know that we have to quarantine during the Covid-19, I worried how can we have enough food, how can we eat only the foods that from the freeze or the dried food. As a person who loves to go out to eat Shabu or Moo Kra Ta (Thai barbecue), this time I can not go to eat my favorite foods. I cannot even want to imagine it. It’s unbelievable!!
However, for me, sometimes I felt that it wasn’t that bad to live alone for a while. It might be lonely of course I know, but when I live alone for a moment, I feel peaceful like I have never had it. Sometimes, when we have free time, it allows us to think about ourselves more. We can read or watch something to help kill the time but also get the entertainment. We can try out some new skills that we have never tried before like cooking new recipes, baking cookies or something, or even planting. Sometimes, when I don’t know what to do, I stare at the ceiling and listen to my favorite music like “Peaceful Easy Feeling” of the Eagles or “Stand by Me” of Oasis, and it just really makes me relax from stress, so it’s not that bad when we have time for ourselves.
