One Day [Spoiler Alert]

“Whatever happens tomorrow, we had today.”

David Nicholls, One Day

What is the first thing that comes into your mind when you think of a particular date? Do you remember the circumstances that happened in that day? I just had a chance to watch this masterpiece film that was adapted from a book, “One Day,” which was written by David Nicholls. This film focuses on telling the story of the protagonists through a particular date, 15th of July. This day might be a normal day that has nothing to be remembered for some people, but at the same time, it can be a special day that can change someone’s life forever.

Emma Morley (Starring by Anne Hathaway) and Dexter Mayhew (Starring by Jim Sturgess) met each other for the first time on July 15. The story captures how the relationship between these two characters has developed through the age of time, but decides to illustrate it solely 15th of July. Personally, I believe that there is a reason behind the decision of choosing to portray a story only one day a year because we can see that time is being highlighted. In the first part of the film, the protagonists tend to keep their feeling unrevealed because they are thinking that being in this situation is better. The time has passed. Days by Days, Weeks by weeks, and years by years have gone without their relationship development until both of them grow in age; Dexter has a child, and Emma spends her time with her new boyfriend. Dexter realizes that at the end of the day, he needs Emma.

“Why do they keep making their time wasted when the one in front of them is the right one that understands them the most? I keep asking myself for hours, especially when I saw the ending made me cry so hard. If they choose to spend their time together, they can have a lot of memories much more than this, I thought to myself. Then, I realized the quote that is very popular from this film, “Whatever happens tomorrow, we had today.” That is! The story wants to show the importance of “time” to the audience to think that nothing is too late to do something even if our hair would turn grey and our eyes cannot see clearer than it was. The fact is “at least we did it.” After that, the sad ending is quite reasonable for me because even though Dexter and Emma start their relationship late, at least they have it, at least they try it, and at least they know, it worth the time.
