1. Katy Perry – The One That Got Away
As far as I have read the book for about a few hours, Katy Perry’s well-known song, “the One that Got Away” popped up in my head. It is the song that is full of regret in a relationship which I think is suitable with You’ve Reached Sam‘s theme. The loss of the beloved one without saying goodbye is hurt, and it even became worse when you are losing that person without any signs.
Talk about our future like we had a clue
Katy Perry – The One That Got Away
Never planned that one day, I’d be losing you
2. Taylor Swift – All Too Well
It is the perfect song that reminisces love so well. The stages of remembering the moments, the time spent, or the feeling happened are told through the song flawlessly. In my point of view, every couple who went through many things together will feel with the lyrics intensely as the same as the relationship between the characters, Sam and Julie. Their memories keep haunting, making it harder for them to move on.
You taught me bout your past
Taylor Swift – All Too Well
Thinking your future was me
3. Johnny Stimson – You’re Not There
A person who used to live and spend their time with you every single day, and then he/she has gone. It is a kind of sadness when a person who you used to share the emotions or moments together cannot have memmories with you anymore. So, as this song has the same tone as You’ve Reached Sam, I think it is one of the songs you should listen to while reading You’ve Reached Sam.
I see your face in crowded places everywhere
Johnny Stimson – You’re Not There
But you’re not there
4. Sasha Alex Sloan – Dancing With Your Ghost
A song for a person who cannot move on cannot be any more perfect than Sasha Alex Sloan’s “Dancing With Your Ghost.” Julie cannot move on from Sam, for she lost him from having a car accident. She cannot accept the reality and still cling to Sam as she did before. It is hard to move on from the person you planned a future with. Dancing together, kissing each other, or calling the one you feel comfortable with are all gone in a night which can turn a life to be diffenrent. I understand Julie completely how she feel lost and cannot cope with trauma, so I think this is the best song for this story as it feels like the soundtrack of You’ve Reached Sam.
I put the record on
Sasha Alex Sloan – Dancing With Your Ghost
Wait ’til I hear our song
Every night I’m dancing with your ghost
5.Kodaline – High Hopes
When we are trying to move on from the one we love so much, memories keep haunting us like it is going to kill us right away. Things we see remind us of them. Flashback of the time spent circles in our head. We feel like the pain we received is eternity. Time feels like it stands still while the world keep moving. Thus, this is one of the songs that can tell the sadness from this story ideally.
I remember it now, it takes me back to when it all first started
Kodaline – High Hopes
But I’ve only got myself to blame for it, and I accept it now
It’s time to let it go, go out and start again
But it’s not that easy
