After Reading “The Masque of the Red Death” by Edgar Allan Poe

This is the reaction writing after reading “The Masque of the Red Death” by Edgar Allan Poe. It was written to submit the writing task in the Creative Writing Class at Mae Fah Luang University, Chiang Rai, Thailand, and I want to share it with all of you.

While I was reading The Masque of the Red Death by Edgar Allan Poe, I think even though the story was written a long time ago from the present time, it can be related to the actions of humans and the situation nowadays.

For me, Prince Prospero is the image of the higher class who has everything to survive from the disease and have fewer financial problems because as we can see in the Covid-19, many people lose their jobs, and even though how much the disease is dangerous, they have to go out and find money in order to look after the family, so they are likely to inflect the disease than those higher class; however, that doesn’t mean people in upper class will not be inflected. They might also get the disease, but not early as the working class like the story that at the end people cannot escape the disease and death.

Moreover, Prince Prospero reminds me of the people who ignore the protection of the Covid-19 because we see that Prince Prospero has no fear of pestilence even though this disease can kill him and his friends. He still invited his friends to his place.

Prince Prospero is like the people in the present time that intend to arrange the party even though we all should quarantine ourselves. For me, these all are the consequences of humans’ actions. As we can see nowadays, the number of patients who inflected Covid-19 still get higher. I think we all should help each other to decrease the inflection, and not just push the responsibility to only the doctors.
